Q. What happened to the old IHONC discussion board?
The old IHONC discussion board was discontinued several years ago when the web site was moved to a different web hosting provider. We were in the process of resurrecting the discussion board in 2009 when that web hosting provider ceased operations with no prior notice. We will work to recreate the discusson board capabilities for the 2010-2011 season.

Q. What does the RSS button under the search box do?
In short, that little RSS button lets you subscribe to the ihonc.org web site. When you subscribe, you will be notified when there are changes to publicly accessible content on ihonc.org. Using RSS, you do not have to periodically check ihonc.org to find updates. Instead, you will be told there are updates.
How you are told of ihonc.org updates depends on what RSS reader software you use. There are many different RSS readers and which one you use is up to you.
Rather than go into the details of RSS feeds and RSS reader software, it is best to provide links to other pages that do just that. So here they are:

Q. How do I join IHONC?
You must be registered and certified with USA Hockey for the current season. New members need to complete a "new member application" form which is located within the Downloads section of this web site. Submit your completed application and IHONC membership fee to the IHONC Secretary (both are identified on the form) by December 30 of the current year. IHONC will review your application to ensure that you have met the age and hockey certification requirements, and reserves the right not to accept all applications submitted.
As a new member that is a new USA Hockey Official (Level 1), you will be required to participate in IHONC's mentor program (see Mentor Program section of this web site) before receiving regular game assignements.
Any new member with prior USA Hockey officiating experience may be subject to an evaluation by an IHONC Evaluator.
All new members are subject to a probationary period as stipulated within IHONC's By-Laws.

Q. How do I get games from IHONC?
IHONC uses a web based assignment program called "The Aribter". Games are assigned by an IHONC Commissioner to a qualified and active IHONC member. Once the commissioner publishes game assignments (which is done for the following month's schedule on the 3rd Monday of the previous month--note IHONC does receive a number of late add game requests from our customers, so game assignments for these late add games will be published electronically via the Aribter at least 5 days before the scheduled game date--any game requiring an official assignment less than 5 days from the game date will require an Commissioner to make voice-to-voice contact with the member for acceptance or declination of the game assignment, and if accepted a electronic assignment will follow thru the Arbiter). The member does have the option to decline game assignments published within 4 days of the publish date. The member will receive an email from the Arbiter notifying you of a game assignment (so check your emails often). Failure to accept or decline a game assignment that you made yourself available for may result in disciplinary action in accordance with IHONC Game Assignment Policy.
It is very important and encumbent upon the member to update their availability calendar within The Arbiter (ie: block dates and times that a member cannot work). The Arbiter also allows other limitation blocks (ie: limiting travel distances, blocking specific rink locations, etc.).
The IHONC Board conducts an annual review of each member's rank, which determines what level game that member is qualified to work. If you are not receiving game assignments for the level in which you feel qualified to work, the member should complete an Evaluation Request form (IHONC web site, navigate to Members Area/Evaluation Request) which will be transmitted to IHONC's Evaluation Coordinator (not the Commissioner) to request an evaluation.
