- C
- Coincidental penalties
Penalties that are assessed at the same stoppage of play.
- Control
The act of propelling the puck in a desired direction. A player with control of the puck also has possession of the puck.
- D
- Deflection
- Direction
The act of knowingly and deliberately changing the path of the puck. This is most applicable when determining whether a goal is scored because of skate contact. Under USA Hockey rules, a player does not have to use a deliberate kicking motion for a goal to be disallowed. Rather, all the player needs to do is direct the puck with the skate.
- F
- Field of Vision
- G
- Golden Rectangle
- Golden Triangle
- N
- No Man's Land
The area of the ice surface that an official should NOT skate in during play. See Divisions of the Ice Surface for a graphical representation of this area.
- No Parking Zone
- P
- Possession
The player who last touched the puck is deemed to have possession of it. Note that it is possible to have possession of the puck without having control of it.
- S
- Sight lines
- Snapshot
A term used to describe the short duration for viewing an action to determine whether to call a penalty or not. The term snapshot is typically used in comparison with a "video clip". A snapshot is of much shorter duration. The emphasis is on determining the legality of the play as it happens and not waiting to judge the legality based solely on the outcome.
- T
- Trigger
An action that does not itself constitute a penalty, but under many circumstances may lead to one. Examples include: raising the stick parallel to the ice when not in possession and control of the puck; placing the stick between the legs of an opponent; dropping a hand off of the stick when checking an opponent; an attacking player "beating" a defender through speed and acceleration
